Overwatch WidowMaker Cosplayer, Elodie, France

Continuing our “Cosplayer Interview Series” next on my list is one of my favorite character from an online game. which I personally play at the moment. The next is an Overwatch WidowMaker Cosplayer from the North of France. She’s one of those cosplayers that I have met in Made in Asia convention in Brussels, Belgium.

I reckoned that time when the first time we met each other. I was in my Japanese costume (trying my own “banal” or basic cosplay). She was with her marvelous “Fatale/Widowmaker” cosplay attire.

Elodie attends conventions in France and in Belgium since she lives not so far from the border of two countries, she calls herself the “Solitaire Wolf” who roves into conventions and love the ambiance of meeting new people around.

I would say this interview will a bit divergent in contrast to other because, our cosplayer, Elodie prefers to answer in French which is she is more comfortable with.

So let’s get this party on and prepare your self to hear some French words, well don’t worry I’ll translate it for you!

Discovering Cosplay

When I was young, I was a fan of MMORPG, Final Fantasy and Anime. I started to cut old clothes and took the path of fantastic-medieval style. Originally I was more interested in roleplay of medieval festivals.

But I find that the universe of video games and anime is more challenging than the rest.

I love to create my own design, create my own custom costumes, and I think it’s also a good way of sharing my creations with others who have the same passion as mine.ย

First convention as a Cosplayer

Ma premiรจre convention ร  รฉtรฉ la Made In Asia de Bruxelles en 2011, j’y suis allรฉe en touriste Neko-girl.

My first convention was Made In Asia in Brussels in 2011, I went as a tourist Neko-girl, I remember being photographed 2/3 times and I was already proud of myself at that time.ย

But seeing all those beautiful suits and costumes, I thought I could do better. So at the Japan Expo Belgium of the same year, I made my first cosplay costumes in 3 weeks creating my very own Balsa de Seirei No Moribito.

Few people had recognized my character, but it was very pleasant, it felt good in spite of my shyness.

Costume/Gear/Props/Armor Making

The first costume of Balsa Seirei No Moribito is one of those costumes that is close to my heart. I truly adore the character itself, its presence, strength, and the battles of the animรฉ are epic. I could say it was totally the first cosplay I wanted to make!

Don’t laugh at me, but, I wanted the best fabric as possible and being new to this. Not knowing any good fabric store, I searched and found a DIY store.

I bought a red linen curtain, just what I needed! For the rest, I have recycled some extra fabric that I had at home like a broom handle to make the spear, (cut wood by hand to make the blade) object from the leather legs of the army and Hair extension.

Unluckily I didn’t have a sewing machine at the time so I did everything with my own hands.

My Creations

The Hardest part

I have made 10 other costumes of which I like the characters as well

    • Zero (Drakengard 3)ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย  Sansa Starkย  (Game Of Thrones)ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย  Kamael (Lineage II)
Tohka (Date a Live)
Max (Life is Strange)
    • Boa Hancock (One Piece)

All these projects (quoted in chronological order of manufacture) were a big challenge for me, the Kamael, for example, I used a lot of different materials, and had to attach accessories on the costume.

I had decided to make them removable for the ability to wash suit separately. The Widowmaker is the first cosplay with bodypaint and with the use of Worbla.

The hardest part of all this is to have nothing as a pattern to copy. I did everything out from scratch, moreover, I have this special talent to choose fabrics that are a bit complicated to use but which are, in my eyes, perfect for the character.

Material like elastane, leather, silk, jersey, velvet. With a standard sewing machine, I can tell you that I often had misfires.

But my will is stronger, While preparing longterm projects I had to make some stopovers and relax for few hours then tried again to continue until I could make the best result.

What does a Cosplayer mean to you?

Crรฉativitรฉ, Jeux, Amitiรฉ, et qui sait mรชme Profession?

I think cosplay is a nonstop happiness! I mean, what better way to have a hobby of creating a costume from the beginning till the end.
How cool is playing the character’s role, sharing techniques, getting better, making great encounters with the supporters and co cosplayers, and having fun in conventions? how awesome is this Profession?

For some people, it is a portal, a network in which everyone could present to the world their beautiful cosplays works.

Worst and Unforgettable Experience

Made In Asia.

My grievances

There was a situation that automatically came to my mind, it was in March of this year to Made In Asia. For my very first release with Widowmaker, I made many photos with fans of the game, everything went very well.

I had very good feedback and nothing negative comments from anyone until a young man with whom I had taken a picture with proudly posted it on a group of Overwatch gamers.

Not knowing that the said Widowmaker (me) was also a member of that group, the effect was fatal for me. Member of the group criticized my appearance, my costume, saying that I don’t fit the character.

That I don’t have any curves at all and many of them were curious to know if I was a man, I defended myself, however, some continued to mock me.

I’m 26 years old, mature enough to take this criticism but still, I was hurt and I cried, the cosplay costume on which I had spent 4 months and of which I was so proud? was humiliated.

Cosplayers you look up to

My facebook page is filled with different Cosplayers that I admire. Non Stop Props, Bakka Cosplay, Inร ste and many others, including my cosplayer friends.

I am particularly impressed by the new recruit Atalante Dash Cosplay. Her first costume Tracer from Overwatch. It is one of the most beautiful costumes of the character I saw. She really plays it wonderfully!

Your Greatest Achievement

Cette annรฉe ร  la Made in Asia avec mon groupe Overwatch.

This year at Made in Asia with my Overwatch group participated in a contest (group category) and won the “Coup de Coeur du jury”

It really made us all happy since some of our members are still novices in cosplaying. As well as performing on stage. It was really a huge achievement for us to win this kind of competition.

Advices would you give to New Aspiring Cosplayers

To start a cosplay, like as any other project, you have to prepare yourself and do it step by step. Starting with a simple costume you would have the advantage of putting you at ease and comfortable.

In my opinion, you will be able to succeed whatever you want with training. By familiarizing your accessible tools. then try to slowly raise the bar a little higher than as usual by perfectly working on your costumes.

If I succeeded, you will succeed as well!

Where can we see you?

Cette saison vous pourrez certainement me retrouver ร  Facts (21/22 Octobre -Gent).

This season you will certainly be able to meet me at Facts (21/22 October -Gent), one of the Belgian conventions. There will certainly be Widowmaker and Boa Hancock at the rendezvous.

Regarding with my next project for this winter, I will continue with my Overwatch project and make the Widowmaker Huntress skin, a quality challenge with a multitude of work to be done including particular buttons and armor in worbla.

Overview

enaelleartsWhat a great story from Elodie, I’m dusted with embezzlement of her inspiring and motivating story shared with us. Sometimes in our passion, there’s always these people who will pull you down. but never give up! just follow your heart and stood up!

I hope to see her in FACTS, well if I can attend. Thank you very much, Elodie for this incredible opportunity that you have given to me. To share some part of your personal experiences. This will definitely help other aspiring new cosplayers as well as those people who’re looking down on Cosplay.

Lastly, I wanna say “Chapeau” for your works. I’m so proud of you as a supporter/fan and always will support you all the way!

  12. Noel says:

One way to get noticed during cosplay conventions is to come as the popular characters. GoT this time. However, you may expect a lot to be the same as yours. So the next best thing is to be your favorite characters so that even if you may not be able to impress others, at least you have impressed yourself.

    • Alexine says:

Yeah, you are right about that Noel, I think for your first cosplay presentation this is a good strategy. Go with those popular ones first then after if you are known enough by the community, go with the characters that you truly love.

  13. Danielle says:

Wow, these costumes are just amazing. And the makeup too; really brings it up to a realistic level. So impressive. `

    • Alexine says:

Yes that’s true, Sian Ryan, love to share this posts to you guys, at least you’ll know what cosplayers do venture in when they chose this field.

  17. Claire says:

I’ve always thought cosplay was so cool, dressing up in different characters – how fun is that? I’ve never tried – I mean other than costumes, but I would love to wear those professional well-built cosplay costumes someday.
